In this project, my group and I were assigned a scenario in which we were to design a wind turbine blade for the citizens of a rural Guatemalan village. The citizens were without any previous form of electricity and being serviced by an Engineers Without Borders mission. The wind turbine’s end goal was to power small devices like LED lights for the local inhabitants. We worked to define what was needed in the blade, select a material that would best achieve our goals, and calculate/simulate the needed thickness for such a blade to withstand a 70 m/s windstorm.
